چکیده

The absence of any wide-separation gravitational lenses in the Large Bright Quasar Survey is used to place limits on the population of cluster-sized halos in the universe, and hence constrain a number of cosmological parameters. The results agree with previous investigations in strongly ruling out the standard cold dark matter model but they are consistent with low-density universes in which the primordial fluctuation spectrum matches both cluster abundances and cosmic microwave background measurements. These conclusions are essentially independent of the cosmological constant, which is in stark contrast to the statistics of galaxy lenses. The constraints presented here are nullified if clusters have core radii of > ∼ 10 kpc, but are free of a number of potential systematic errors, due to the homogeneity of the data.

A Survey for Large Image-Separation Lensed Quasars

The statistics of gravitationally lensed quasars with multiple images in the 0.1 − 7 range have been measured in various surveys. Little is known, however, about lensed-quasar statistics at larger image separations, which probe masses on the scale of galaxy clusters. We extend the results of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Snapshot Survey for Lensed Quasars to the 7 − 50 range for a sub-sample...

How many arcminute - separation lenses are expected in the 2 dF QSO survey ?

Wide separation lensing statistics offer information about the density profile and abundance of dark halos. Recently a possible discovery of six quasar pairs, which may be lensed multiple images, was reported by Miller et al. (2002). These pairs are selected from a catalog of the 2dF quasar (QSO) survey comprising 22163 quasars. We calculate expected numbers of lensed quasars taking account of ...

A Survey for Large Separation Lensed FIRST Quasars, II. Magnification Bias and Redshift Distribution

The statistics of large-separation gravitational lensing are a powerful tool to probe mass distributions on the scale of galaxy clusters. In this paper we refine the analysis of our survey for large-separation (> 5) lensed FIRST quasars (Ofek et al. 2001) by estimating the magnification bias and the source redshift distribution. Finding no large separation lens among 8000 likely quasars in that...

Gravitational lensing constraint on the cosmic equation of state

Recent redshift-distance measurements of Type Ia supernovae at cosmological distances suggest that two-third of the energy density of the universe is dominated by dark energy component with an effective negative pressure. This dark energy component is described by the equation of state px = wρx (w ≥ −1). We use gravitational lensing statistics to constrain the equation of state of this dark ene...

A ug 2 00 4 Strong Gravitational Lenses in a Cold Dark Matter Universe

We present theoretical and observational studies of strong gravitational lenses produced by clusters of galaxies. Our purpose is to test the Cold Dark Matter (CDM) model at small and highly nonlinear scales where it has been claimed that the CDM model may confront several difficulties. We concentrate our attention on the statistics of strong gravitational lenses because the strong lensing is se...
